Hello Glen,
You need to use Fedora 4 or higher to build the image on. Just get the sdk-tools and install it as root then also get the image-devel tools and run the olpc-image-build.sh script also as root. There are two files:
yum.conf and install.conf that are not copied to the /etc directory but you should be able to figure it out.
