I don't get the hostility??? I'm trying to make a case for sane development.

If you need fixes in Contrib, I would think it's best to push them to an
update folder and not mess with what has been released. The idea of
freezing the repo forever is that we can go back and look at exactly what
was done, perfect or not. Updates are just that, updates.
