the vlc issue is most likely because you're using the version in main
which cannot be built with mp4 support due to licensing issues.
the vlc version in restricted should work with mp4.
plasma media center - not sure about that one, i get the same errors.

And then it freezes and I have to stop it with kill command. Again
result is similar when trying to play music.
