No compilation, too much work for me and you noticed I'm not an expert.
I simply downloaded Oracle Java SE JDK 1.8.x straight from their repository.
I took the solaris x64 tar.gz package and unpacked it in
/opt/java/jdk1.8.x and set JAVA_HOME in hbase configuration file.
The limit of 256 files seems to apply also to their JDK:

How did you get openjdk8 to compile on OmniOS? We thought about moving off of
openjdk7, but had Real Problems (TM) making it happen. Did you bootstrap with
an Oracle binary?
However, someone mentioned in the hbase mailing list that the limit of 256 open
files may be too low.
I don't know if we patch openjdk7 to be more than 256 files, that MIGHT be
possible in our openjdk7 build.
The ONLY reason, BTW, we ship any JDK is because of illumos's use of it for
poold. If I could be rid of JDK, I'd eliminate it and tell people to use
omniti-ms, pkgsrc, or others.
Do you agree? my system is the result of (update after update) an original
r151006, maybe I still have an old value?
No... our java gets (re)built with every release.
