I don't know what SMF uses for sure, but I'd be surprised if it was not
the local mailer.

nullmailer seems like it would be a good choice, though it would require
some porting. postfix in relay mode would be very low overhead.





It is not really the overhead I am worrying about, it is an extra service that 
isn't needed, I want to remove every possible piece that can cause failure.

I'm sure someone on this list knows what SMF uses. And as well how to send mail 
from SMF to remote hosts as well, including auth.
