Hi Eric,
It's great that you have put this out there - and maybe it has spurred me
on to be a more active member of the group - we'll have to see.
But hey guys, you and the faithful few made a great job of sharing Olympic
information and photo's and I am much indebted to you for that. So, as a
proud Brit I would love to share some of my own musings with you...

Yes, it was a fabulous Olympics and, as I don't live close to London I feel
I can speak reasonably impartially. The organisers and Gamesmakers did a
fabulous job of making things go well for all visitors and we had no
reported negative incidents - I actually think that the G4S Security fiasco
that meant we had to draft in members of the army worked positively for the
British Army, changing many peoples perception of them for the better.

The TV coverage here was unbelievably good and we had great exposure to all
events - I never did find where the wrestling was being televised - but
that's another story LOL.

You must realise that we Brits can be really parochial and it was great to
see that put largely behind us and unite as a nation in sport - amazing
when you consider we are smaller than most US states!

As for the ceremonies, well, I have to admit to being a little non-plussed
for the first 10 minutes of the opening ceremony and wondered what on earth
must any foreigners think is going on! But it all came together incredibly
well and I really loved the journey from ancient to modern Britain. Yes,
there were definitely a few performers that could have been selected a
little better - Paul McCartney for one - and I can very much understand
that a lot of the athletes would have wondered who he is - I can't for the
life of me understand why he keeps getting wheeled out but there were a few
strange decisions there.

I loved the closing ceremony too and, contrary to many of my friends on
facebook, actually liked most of the musical choices:-)
Yes, it was glittery and OTT, but hey, why not? I agree we could have done
with a few more introductions - but our TV coverage did put up captions for
most who performed, I thought they would have gone out to most networks,
perhaps not?

As for the medal hauls, well, they were truly amazing, the athletes all
excelled and it was a joy to see them doing their stuff. Should Tom Daley
have been allowed a second dive? Well, even as a Brit, I would say yes, he
acted in accordance with the rules and I think that his second dive
absolutely nailed and it proved his ability - he was beaten fair
and square by an extremely impressive American though - let's see what Rio
brings...;-)

The only other thing I will add is that I found the whole two weeks
extremely emotional - and am still trying to work out if it was because it
was being staged here - perhaps it was pride, I dunno - all I can say is
that I hope everyone else out there enjoyed them even half as much as I did.

Cheers,
Jon
