In a few hours, thefinals of the Australian Open Men's Singles competition will provide a showdownbetween Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem. It's no surprise we see the perennial champ of Melbourne, Novak Djokovic, once again inthe final of the Australian Open, but not many would have predicted hisopponent to be Austria's Dominic Thiem. Thiem dropped the first set to Alexander Zverev on Friday, but in thefour hour match, he came back strong, winning the second, third and fourthsets. A two-time Grand Slamfinalist on clay, Thiem has transitioned into an effective hard-court player. While he has shown he has the offensive and defensive weapons to match up withthe best on the blue courts in Melbourne, coming up against seven-time AustralianOpen winner Djokovic is going to be a massive challenge. To win, Thiem willhave to bottle the brilliant grit he showed not just Friday, but in hisfour-set win over Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. An upset would bemonumental. Djokovic, after all, owns this tournament. He has won sevenAustralian Open titles, a record in men's tennis. This Australian Openmen's final promises to be a fascinating end to a great tournament down under. Also promisinggreatness is the final National Football League matchup of the years. US eyes will turn toward Miami, where the 2020Super Bowl LIV will be contested between The Kansas City Chiefs and the SanFrancisco 49ers. 49ers quarterback,Jimmy Garoppolo, is a corn fed hunk from Illinois. Raised in the Chicago Suburbs at place called Rolling Meadows, Jimmy G has thrown a football in more than onecornfield, playing, as he did, for the Eastern Illinois University atCharleston, in a rural area 3/5ths down the state. Chosen in the 2014 NFL draft, Garoppolo haswon two Super Bowls as backup to New England Patriots' Tom Brady. Two years ago, he was traded to SanFrancisco, and has continued to show his prowess on and off the field. While the Kansas CityChiefs' Patrick Mahomes, named the league MVP a year ago, has already cementedhimself as one of the NFL's best quarterbacks, Jimmy Garoppolo is still tryingto make his mark. Mahomes is noslouch. A Texan and son of a MajorLeague Baseball Pitcher, Mahomes has been around pro sports all his life. This year, he has led the Kansas City Chiefsto their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years. Like at theAustralian Open, but sparks will be flying in Miami this afternoon for SuperBowl LIV. For those not interested inthe action there is the competition among the commercials. The low point may be the promised commercialwith the funeral of Mr. Peanut, or maybe the presentations by politiciansMichael Bloomberg or the President.
