[Winona Online Democracy]

Project FINE in its young adult work group has formatted a survey which
would be provided to young adults (16-20 years) to learn of their social
needs in Winona. The "newcomers" to our community have spoken openly about
their needs to find a place to socialize where there is no smoking or
drinking, but dancing, board games, music, pool, etc. all kinds of
refreshments would be available -- modeled after the European youth clubs.
Our Bosnian friends say that in Europe young adults pay $3.00 to $5.00 per
night to attend these clubs, meet other people, and socialize in a healthy
way. The City Youth Task Force saw the draft of this survey last month. We
are in the process of taking this survey with Freshmen and Sophonore at the
Colleges, and Juniors and Seniors at the high school level. One of the
messages we also hears from the young adults at high school level is that
when the school day is over, there is great difficulty breaking into the
social cliques in Winona. The new gathering place in Winona, Rock Solid,
on Third Street, is one kind of place for those young adults who are
Christian. This would not take away from this place, but be an alternate to
embrace interfaiths and multicultures.

Whether the young adults in this city believe there is a need will depend
on the outcome of the survey. If any young adults would like to work on
this project, please call Project FINE at 452.4100 or respond to this
e-mail. If the survey confirms what some young adults are saying then
strategies will have to be developed to meet those needs. What we have been
able to learn about these clubs in Europe is that young people are very much
in charge of operating these places. Does anyone have additional insights
about this situation?
