[Winona Online Democracy]

Hello, Everyone.
This is my recollection and opinion of the BGH issue, it is not
meant to represent the entire school board.
The board passed a split vote on the BGH milk issue a few months
ago.. I was a minority vote against going with BGH milk.
A bit of history... every year as we call for the dairy bids,
discussion occurs about BGH. There are two basic issues regarding BGH. One
is the higher cost of BGH-free products. The second is possible health
concerns.
Last year, I collected a very fat file of documents for and against
BGH, research for and against, testimontials for and against, international
movement literature for and against BGH, etc. People from many different
sources provided articles which either scientifically proved or disproved
effects of BGH on humans. Some very fine people and very fine organizations
support opposing positions.
This big blue folder is on file with Nancy Gerth, the 861 Food
Service Director as a resource for parents, staff or community members.
All of the businesses which bid on our dairy needs charge
significantly higher prices for BGH-free products. Some companies are
dropping the BGH-free line due to small demand. Most districts, except one
I believe, in our area do not provide BGH-free products.
Many board members saw the extraordinary scientific data on both
sides as not justifying a cost increase, especially in a year when we
compelled to be extremely budget-conscious.
I hope that I've presented this in a neutral fashion. Although I
personally would like 861 to offer BGH-free products and I buy BGH-free
milk for my family, I understand and respect the majority vote.
