I agree that, from what I've read, the possible health risks to people
drinking rBHG milk seem pretty murky. However, as I recall the public
debate a few years ago, the bigger issue is how the use of rBHG effects the
health of the cattle AND the economic effects on the smaller producers if
widespread use among the large producers becomes accepted. I wonder if Jim
Riddle or someone else more versed in this subject could explain this more
clearly.
I'm sure this is much more complicated than what I'm stating here. I'll
continue to buy non-rBHG as long as I have a choice, because I think that I
am supporting a more traditional, low-tech method of raising dairy cattle
that is compatible with smaller family dairy farms. For the most part, I
would think that's the majority of dairy farming that goes on within our
School District. I wonder if this ever came up as part of the discussion
at the School Board.
Also, I'm puzzled as to why there's such a difference in cost from the
suppliers, when the cost at the grocery store is the same. Does anyone
know?
