[Winona Online Democracy]

When reading this morning's Daily News an article caught my eye -
still having two kids in college - about the sting operation arresting
46 at Chuckers.
( It's also at the web site -
http://www.winonadailynews.com/local_news/20001029_3.html )
I could rant about underage drinking or about the lax ID checking by
Chuckers. Or, I suppose some might take this opportunity to argue for
lowering the drinking age. NO -- my main source of agitation
concerning this article relates to what a public employee is doing
and, more so, is allowed to do.
If the Chuckers' owner is really also a local Realtor AND the WSU
Athletic Director as the article says, I have serious concerns about
the ethics involved and about the personnel practices of the State
University System. I see a serious conflict of interest in allowing
the WSU Athletic Director to have a second job as a Realtor. A WSU
Administrator would have access to inside information concerning the
what, where, and when of taking over nearby property thereby giving
him unfair advantage if he were in the real estate business. A
University Athletic Director being the owner of a local bar that
solicits college students as customers and that has repeatedly
knowingly served alcohol illegally to minors raises serious concerns.
The obvious fact that the vast majority of college students are under
age 21 has always caused me to wonder how bars get away with so much
solicitation of the student population.
If the State University System does not have a conflict of interest
law, rule or policy that governs their employee's outside employment,
I would hope this incident would motivate them to do so ASAP.
