[Winona Online Democracy]

I'm trying to get done with my email for the evening but I just couldn't
let Paul Double's posting go unremarked, even though I realize he was
directing his question to Steve Kranz. Paul certainly gives a daunting
list of options. I'd like to suggest an addition to his list of choices for
balancing the district's budget:

        * Organize community support for a levy override that would bring
ISD 861's override status to at least the average level of other schools in
the Big Nine conference, since those schools are roughly equivalent in size
and character of community. (We are currently at the bottom of the Big Nine
in the amount of financial support from this source.)

Other possibilities beyond the scope of the local school board: (1) the
legislature could move toward providing a higher proportion of funding in
order to equalize per pupil funding around the state, as per Gov. Ventura's
suggestion; (2) the feds could decide to fully fund Special Education,
providing relief to state and local funding sources, as proposed by
Democratic candidates Gore, Dayton, etc. Unfortunately, neither of these is
likely to happen real soon (although, in my mind, a Democratic victory next
week would help.)

As far as Paul's list, I hope that nobody seriously thinks staff should be
further reduced and/or class size further enlarged. I understand some of
the elementary schools got a little relief last fall, but come talk with
students or staff at WSHS!
