[Winona Online Democracy]

Hello Winona Online Democracy,

Here is another great web site that deals with the history, politics, and
possible reforms of the Electoral College.

http://www.votewithamerica.com/

Again, I think if any kinds of reforms are going to take place, the energy
and ideas will come from the grassroots level. I would love to see our
community discussing and when necessary, debating, the important democratic
topics surrounding the Electoral College.

I think we could help make Minnesota a shining example of clean elections
and a better democracy.

I disagree with Jesse Ventura on many issues but he is very committed to
these kinds of reforms. We are lucky to have a politician in a high office
who is willing to do away with the influence of big money and antiquated
election traditions. Most politicians are too addicted or controlled by
big money to unilaterally disarm.

What could we do at the local level to start the ball rolling?

UPDATE: GOP Electors Feel the Heat after Gore Concession

The vast majority of Americans believe that the popular vote should
determine the President. In the 2000 election, however, the Electoral
College is expected to overrule the popular vote, electing George W.
Bush by a vote of 271-267 even though Al Gore received over 300,000
more votes nationally than Bush.

VoteWithAmerica.com encourages you to make your voice heard by
calling, e-mailing, or writing to the electors to ask that they vote
with America and elect Gore. We have obtained contact information for
172 electors in 18 states that voted Republican in this election.
Most of the targeted states do not legally require their electors to
vote for their party's official candidate, meaning that each elector
is free to put patriotism above partisanship. When contacting
electors, remember to be courteous and to respect their opinions and
decisions.

This site also provides background information on the Electoral
College, a word about privacy concerns regarding the electors, and a
media center. We believe that this campaign could help sow the seeds
for abolition of the Electoral College. Citizens for True Democracy,
founded in 1998 to improve political participation via electoral
reform, is a non-partisan public interest organization based in
Claremont, California.
