[Winona Online Democracy]

Pam, I don't know if you know me or not but I have been involved with
the schools for over 30 years. Through the P.T.A.'s and other school
groups and also was a board member for one term and have attended board
meetings for over 20 years.
First of all what a dumb thing to say that if the superintendents salary
was the same as a teacher we could help solve some of the money problems
90 per cent of the school districts in Minnesota are having. Why would
anyone want the top job if he or she had the same salary. That is like
asking all company CEO's to take the same salary home as their
employees. When people complain about teachers, administrators etc. and
the hours they work or the money they make, I usually tell them if you
think it is so easy why don't you go to college and get your teaching
degree. We would probably not have so many problem kids in our school
if parents were doing the job they should be doing with their children
at home.
Five of our 7 children started their education in a small rural school
and did well. I have always liked the neighborhood schools and fought
for them, but now I think it is time the school board and the community
decide it is time to close some of the smaller schools for the good of
the majority of the students. I know closing schools is a hot issue. I
have been involved long enough to see the parents of schools fight like
mad to keep their elementary schools open and then as the children reach
6th grade they ship their kids to a different district. Either we have
to have more money to lower class sizes or close some schools and let
the chips fall where they may.
