[Winona Online Democracy]

I was just having this conversation with some other school district people
and find this viewpoint very frustrating. I have this sense that in Winona
we don't want to pay people very well, and certainly not top dollar for
anything. That somehow we think because it's so beautiful here, that makes
up for making less money. Just because some of us make less money, doesn't
mean we should expect others to as well. School administrators are in short
supply these days- at least principals and superintendants are. If we want
quality people we have to pay a higher price. We will be finding this with
teachers too. I can name a dozen young families we've met since moving here
6 years ago who have moved out of Winona because they can get better pay
elsewhere. I think for all the responsibilities and headaches these
administrators have, not to mention their years of experience and advanced
degrees- I doubt we're overpaying them. Now, if you want to start talking
about what the salaries basketball and football stars are making, or the CEO
of Reebok, Disney etc.- then I'd agree ;)
