My first question is why the local United Way is requiring all member agencies to sign a discrimination agreement. A transparent action designed to isolate a particular group.  The Boy Scouts are a private organization and the Supreme Court has upheld the standards they have established for scout leaders. What they do is legal.  So now, this has become a matter of who is OFFENDED by their policy. I believe the United Way has in the past addressed a similar problem with agencies providing abortion services, by allowing contributors the option of not supporting a given agency or designating a specific agency to be the recipient of an individuals contribution. Fair enough I guess. I dont want to fund abortions so the United Way wisely provided a way to continue receiving my donations without ruffling my feathers.

My second question: why is this different?

The Boy Scouts are being treated like bandits for having the gumption to stick to their principles. The United Way could have fairly handled this situation with all the tools currently available. If you don't like the Scouts say that when you make your pledge.

Bob, you may feel you are doing the righteous thing but I see little difference, in principle,  between this and the zealots that bomb abortion clinics. You both think you are doing the right thing and both are illegal. I dont think this action could survive a court challenge. It is the United Way that is illegally discriminating against the Boy Scouts. This isn't a matter of winning a local popularity contest. Even if 98% of those in this group feel you are right, it is still discriminatory.

[Winona Online Democracy]

Greetings all...as you may or may not know, the United Way of the
greater Winona area today announced that the boy scouts will no longer
receive general fund dollars from the annual drive.

This is because of their inability to sign an agreement with the
United Way that probibits discrimination based on sexual orientation.

This was a tough decision that took over six months...and involved
lengthy conversations with the scouts.

The scouts are a terrific group...but they should play by the same rules
as everybody  else, right?

Did we do the right thing?
