[Winona Online Democracy]
Hello Jerome and Online Democracy,
Jemome, I did not in any way intend to malign you for your coverage of the
School Board meeting. You are a darn good reporter, not perfect...maybe a
little biased but hey, I'm far from perfect and perhaps a tad biased too.
;->
I figured it was because of the lateness of the meeting that the story was
not covered. However, since the lay offs were printed in the Board minutes
I thought some mention of them might have been made. I thought it would
have been poetic justice to have our Governor appear in a newspaper along
with stories of school closings and cutting teachers.
My main fear is that people do not know how many people were laid off last
year or how many people may be laid off this year.
Dr. Bartleson, could you ask Ms. Blaisdell to find out how many people were
actually laid off last year?
I fear that people have an impression that the people who were laid off
last year were all hired back and that everything is now just fine. What
the kids are seeing is fine but behind the surface there is a lot of stress
and strain.
I know that some of the people who were laid off yesterday will recieve
their jobs back but I'm concerned that last night's cuts were not the last
ones that will be made. Isn't it true that more cuts will have to be made
next month? Are there any estimates of all the potential cuts that may be
needed?
I fear that people still do not know how bad things are going to get until
we start seeing stories about losing entire foreign language programs, more
music and sports funding cuts, more schools are closed, or until more
teachers lose their jobs. I fear that these realizations will happen too
late, when the State Legislature has already made their decisions. Then
it's too late to do much.
Now is the time to call or write to your State Legislator but I worry that
most people do not yet have a reason to feel concerned.
Having said all that, I also want to say that like Virginia Laken, Joanie
Heydt-nelson, and others, I'm grateful to have a Superintendent and School
Board who reply quickly and respectfuly and sincerely care about what is
happening to the kids and adults in our schools. Thank you Dr. Bartleson
and School Board.
