A new vote is not needed because I fail to see what grounds have been meet to justify that. If a new vote did not happen after all the garbage that happened in Florida why should there be a new vote here. This has to be the only municipality that is more concerned about a school referendum than a congressional race. (Note the last special election for Senate.) How about we allow only people under the age of 18 to vote after all they will be the ones that will be shammed the right to a decent education (if such a thing can exist in such a pathetic excuse for a municipality.) To state that college students should not vote further serves as evidence that this town sees WSU & SMU as meal tickets. (It is too bad no one has the power to rally all the college students to refuse to buy products, services or work their jobs in this town. How fast would the economy collapse?) Why not look at a brief list of ways this 'municipality' benefits 1.) Continually bringing in a fresh supply of teachers to hire n fire because a minority of residents regards education spending as a waste of funds. Benefit to Winona: Keeps the pay down and reduces costly referenda. 2.) A good supply of cheap labour that is refreshed every year. (An oil well that never runs dry!) Benefit: Keeps the pay scale down for most businesses that require 'non-skilled' labour. In theory, this keeps prices diminished. 3.) New markets to continually sell a broad range of products to. The best part about this: a new crowd comes in next year so you can sell more goods. Benefit: Allows merchants to theoretically buy bulk and pass savings on to the customers or to their wallet. A stronger economy is also a side benefit from this. 4.) A group to constantly complain about (and harass (see point number 5)) so minor issues about how the city could save thousands of dollars by revamping their street lamps get pushed under the rug. Benefits: Oops that is costing Winona money. Knowing how people do not like parting with their precious pennies one would conclude revamping the street lamps to a more of a priority. The ultimate gain, lower taxes. 5.) Extra police officers with the sole duty of ticketing college students and out of state 'residents' for minor offenses that they do not ticket older citizens or state residents for. Benefit: An additional amount of stable jobs is always good for an economy. (Not to mention ticket dollars.) Conclusion, massive wage pressures combined with a sudden decline in market sales would create a load of volatility to the economy that I doubt could be absorbed. And on a different note... Everywhere look around this municipality I see people advocating the violation of someone else's rights. If it is not the right to a fair trial, it is the right to have ones own words spoken. If it is not that it is the resorting to using the government to inflict someone else's religious beliefs on someone else. Perhaps the truly educated are the people that accept rights as a two way street. Dare I say it, the US of A will never be a free state until that constant is universally understood. Perhaps when this constant is understood, American hypocrisy will finally end. BTW to the anti referendum- anti- crack open my vice sealed wallet movement (which includes a certain newspaper editor that seems to have all the ideas: )Try running someone for school board instead of sitting there complaining about the board allegedly not listening to your concerns*** or spending a penny to print a ballot. *** I find the claim the claim that the board does not listen to be absurd. The evidence of the board paying attention is everywhere. David Dittmann, coauthor of the new thriller online book series, "Winona, Dante's Theme Park." I will be gladly paying more taxes simply on the knowledge that others will be angered by the action of parting with their money.
