Write Program Crashing

I have a ms word document saved in .doc format that i am trying to open on my 
macbook pro running os x 10.7.4 every time i try to open it with open office it 
crashes and won't work I tried the suggested fix of deleting the saved 
application state and reinstalling but it didn't fix the issue…..help please!
