Not sure I see the problem. I use Facebook, and it has put me in touch with many old friends and colleagues that I'd lost touch with over the years. As for sharing information .. I only put information on there that I don't mind the whole world knowing (ditto for my website). Yes, putting private details on Facebook (etc.) is inadvisable -- but if people want to do that, that's their choice. It's no worse than putting information on an open website or 'blog'.
