If I remember correctly, there is a port command or option to cause the port to be built from source, I would think that would be a work around.
I have had trouble in the past mixing “Apple programs” with non-Apple programs, which is why I avoid it. I’ve had problems with old versions, unsupported options, and in one case different functionality.
