Greetings Michael,
Sorry, I couldn't resist, the 15-puzzle looked like a excellent demo, s
o I've posted a "clauded" version , "puzzle15.rex", on my website:

Can be be run without compiling ,if you have a recent Ubuntu based
system and download the current "rexx_gtk4.zip", by renaming
librexx_gtk4.so_ubuntu t o just librexx_gtk4.so.

Greetings too, Michael,
Well, this trial may have all the widgets necessary to get it done.
You need a top GTK4Window containing a 4x6/7 GTK4Grid, where the first
4x4 has 15 GTK4Buttons with GTK4Labels with nrs as text and the other
2/3 lines may have a GTK4Box with GTK4Buttons for undo, redo, save and
restore and a final line a GTK4Label for messages. Use the "clicked"
signal to switch the clicked button with the open space if adjacent,
otherwise use the message line for an error message and issue a
well-done when solved. I'll be looking forward, :-).

For those of you interested (in yet another windowing interface for
oorexx) you can download a zip
via rexx_gtk4.cpp
Seeing Rexx and GTK in the same message..... oh so tempting to port
the Fifteen puzzle to ooRexx and rexx_gtk4 as the next place to port
the Fifteen puzzle to! I run Xubuntu, and GTK based programs work
very well with the XFCE environment.
I am thankful,
