? But you said that it involved "lining up" - something that is

Granted the "serialization" in this case is intentionally very simple
and it does involved counting leading whitespace in each line. Such a
process is used in the Aldor compiler for example to convert from
#pile notation to the bracketed form prior to conventional parsing.
