Personally I see VGA compatibility as completely expendable, or at least

deferable to a later version, and the same with any text mode beyond what is strictly required to display a neolithic monochrome console. But if you don't agree, here is a vga core from opencores.org that might work out, assuming the license is ok.

Can somebody give me a hint please, what "FLEX: EPF10K50E-1: 1112lcells" translates into in terms of Spartan III real estate?

I ran across these Spartan III development boards today:

So, for only $100 US you can get a spartan III board that has JTAG. I wonder what device can be used to program it - hopefully Abatron's excellent BDI2000. Would this suffice for a development board for those interested parties in this project to begin familiarizing ourselves with FPGA's? It sure seems like the least expensive option and seems to have been used by other experienced users.

Speaking of these experienced users, I ran across these development boards from a project done last year which included a VGA interface: http://www.ics.forth.gr/carv/async/demo/demo_setup.html

The verilog code they used for VGA might be of usefulness; if only to provide some idea of commonly used pin names. ftp://139.91.184.6/pub/ASPIDA/openDLX-Synchronous-FPGA/Verilog-FPGA-Xilinx/vganew.v

Also of usefulness to me was this page which was a great way to start to learn verilog, VHDL and confluence.
