I don't know much about fpga or programming it. But this project have a good chance of "popularising" (is that a real word?) (re-)programmable hardware among tinkerers all over the world. And if the proper tools (a compiler, or a "synthesizer"(?), in this case) is not available, I'm sure they'll pop up sooner or later, much like any open source project is started. It's kind of a chicken&egg problem...

Btw, is the fpga binary format standardised (as in ppc or i386 isa) or is it unique for every chip?
