I'm getting conflicting information from people on what's permissible
and what's not. Some tell me they have to sign over copyright, some
tell me they can't. Let me see what I an do.

Here's something a bit softer:

(8) Traversal Technology does not require an exclusive copyright to your
work. However, if you do wish do make a contribution, Traversal
Technology does need to have full copyright privileges. Depending on
your local laws, you may be able to retain copyright while allowing
Traversal Technology unrestricted use. Or you may need to assign joint
copyright to Traversal Technology and yourself. Or in some cases, it
may be necessary for you to assign copyright exclusively to Traversal
Technology. It is preferable to find an option that does not prevent
you from making unrestricted use of your work. It is important to be
familiar with your local copyright laws and sign your contribution with
boilerplate that has the broadest coverage. Clauses (1) through (7)
must apply. At your discretion, you are encouraged to add comments to
the "contributions" section of this Work, indicating the nature of your
Modification.
