This could also be solved using an expansion card, so users can
upgrade later without having to solder. I assume this would also
free up some more pins for use with the expansion slot(s?).

An expansion card could just be a simple addon like video-in or
something like that, but using another fpga on the expansion
card could make for a "switch/hub" for several expansions.
