Badly. There isn't much point to it. You want a few I2S links and probably an I2C bus for control stuff from the digital card to the analog box.

Sorry, you ofcourse meant a completely external card here. Tired. Also not very good though. Everything, and certainly latency, is much more straightforward to control with a PCI(e) card, coupled with an extgernal box with the analog parts.

By the way, in the rest of this message I was talking about a high-end consumer card. I do not think there's much market for a consumer card over EUR250. No market whatsoever over EUR500.

Also, with video there's an actual need for open stuff . It's getting harder and harder to get reasonable hardware with open drivers. With sound, this is not the case. ALSA supports many nice cards, and in the professional / production market, I do not expect open hardware to be very important. It seems an audio product would have to compete largely on features/quality alone.
