I don't know.  The discussion has been quite illuminating though.  I
have heard that 16 bits is within the range of human aural detection,
whatever that means.

Classical music can have a very wide dynamic range even within the
same region of contiguous music.  Pini di Roma by Ottorino Respighi
would be the canonical example.
