I have a dual opteron sitting on my desk with an expensive Nvidia framebuffer adapter because I'm too lazy to load the kernel module.
Can I buy any sort of FPGA-based hardware with pci (or ideally pci-express) and a DVI port that at least has a framebuffer driver and mode switching?
