Good enough. Does anybody have a reference they could point to for the expected timing values for value video modes?

Old Xfree86 config files list lots of modes. I'm not sure where they
list the VESA modes now.

You can generate modelines with the gtf command (at least under xorg, but the source code is also here: http://gtf.sourceforge.net/):

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ gtf 1024 768 60

  # 1024x768 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 47.70 kHz; pclk: 64.11 MHz
Modeline "1024x768_60.00" 64.11 1024 1080 1184 1344 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync

if you want all the standard modes, look into xorg's source:

http://webcvs.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/xorg/hw/xfree86/common/vesamodes?revision=1.2&view=markup&pathrev=xgl-0-0-1
