It would be very nice if the people writing device drivers
were smart, but that is not always the case.
For example, a card comes with a Linux driver FROM THE MANUFACTURER
and the driver USES THE WRONG CHIP, and therefore does not work
correctly. This same manufacturer claims to provide support, but
refuses to provide any documentation for the chips used. No
drivers for BSD/Plan9/OS-X/BeOS/etc.
It would seem to me that the self-motivated driver coders are probably
smarter than the ones who are paid by a company just so they can claim
support for Linux.
No surprise. Only when poor Linux support seriously starts cutting
into the bottom lines of lots of hardware and IT companies will we
stop seeing this kind of crap so much.
