How about putting a rs-232 port on the OGC board? (pin headers
would be fine)

This gets you:

The ability to have a rs-232 console if you want. (Most
serious servers use rs-232 consoles to make it easy to
        control them remotely.)

Makes the firmware (e.g. LinuxBIOS) developers happy.

Could be used for setting the video mode, flashing the OGC's
        firmware, etc.

An extra rs-232 port if you aren't using it for the above.

Well, with proper voltage buffers, we could do this with any of the
many user I/O pins on OGD1. Someone could make a board that plugs
into the back of OGD1 and provides anywhere from 15 to 30 RS232/RS422
ports, depending on whether or not one wants RTS/CTS.

[Actually, I'm not sure how many connector pins are ground, but I know
that there are at least 64 usable I/O pins on that connector.]
