I agree and as far as I'm concerned, someone like Keith Packard would
ideally be among the people involved in getting an infrastructural
redesign going on the X side. As far as the kernel is concerned, the DRM
seems not in need of replacement yet.
Lifting the console subsystem out into userland is not a new idea and
something which might follow when early userspace / initramfs is more
firmly entrenched.
The framebuffer I personally consider largely irrelevant at the moment
and have not much idea about.
