OK. We were all already talking about using RS232 or USB or some other external connection to a second machine... I was confused by the message title 'remote access for free'. Using pipes and gzip / rsh (should really be using SSH anyway) isn't any more free than anything else... we're still constrained by the serial/USB/whatever interface.
