There are cables and adapters that convert between DVI and HDMI.
Yes I've heard that "type A HDMI is backward-compatible with the
single-link Digital Visual Interface carrying digital video (DVI-D or
DVI-I, but not DVI-A) ".

HDMI includes audio. Are we going to add audio out?
Make a combo sound card/video card. I'd think audio without dac
wouldn't be that difficult.
However I wouldn't recommend feature creep at this time.

I think HDMI requires HDCP? HDCP is optional on DVI.
So just say that you have dvi with some but not all of hdmi 1.3
features as a bonus.
Plus does anyone know if monitors/tvs would refuse to display if you
didn't encrypt?

Plus it's already broken in theory. HDCP encryption exists only as a
hook on which to hang lawsuits. The DMCA, if you are doing it to be
compatible and not to break copyright protection, then it's fair game.

Seems like I read somewhere that HDMI allowed higher limits
on something or other (resolution? color depth?) than DVI.
hdmi 1.3 added supports for 30-bit, 36-bit, and 48-bit xvYCC with Deep
Color or over one billion colors, up from the 24-bit sRGB or YCbCr in
previous versions.

Is there a standard/specification somewhere for how
large the hole for connectors is supposed to be?
I would assume the standard gives pin out and size information.
