I think that there is a Linux program that generates X modelines.

The program I'm referring to is from Connexant, and it generates
configuration register settings for the Connexant TV chip.  I don't
think the TV chip cares quite so much about timing, which is the job
of our video controller (where X modelines are more relevant).
