Then clearly someone should design a standard for VGA over a bundle of, say, four optical fibres. And design it so that Joe Bloggs can install it without breaking it. And make it affordable.


Such systems exist, they convert exactly the DVI's single link channels (4x TMDS) into 4 fibres and back.

From the first link on google (dvi to fiber optics) the 100ft is "just" for $800 (http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/Cables/fiber_oc.asp)

how about using HD-SDI instead, which does exactly the same thing as HDMI over a single 75 ohm coax with BNC connectors ?
it does 1080p with 8 channel audio
