Most of the DRI drivers lives in user space. There is the DRM module and the card specific module in the kernel, but these don't do much exept checking the command stream to ensure that nonpriviledged clients don't do dangerous stuff. Today the name DRI, "_Direct_ rendering infrastructure" no longer makes much sense since indirect rendering is accelerated, too.

While still far away from being useable (I suppose most developer time goes into porting to new microkernels: Mach->L4->Coyotos) the Hurd has improved over time. AFAIK it can even run X11 now.
