There are such devices supported by Linux. Some people, like Alan Cox don't like them though (http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-kernel/2007/9/10/191698). Offloading TCP/IP stuff to the network adapter improves performance, but makes detection of data corruption less likely.
