Since desire for a free FPGA troolchain is expressed frequently on this
list, I'd like to mention the Slipway project.

While it's still at an early stage they managed to get a carry-ripple
adder from Verilog into an Atmel FPGA using free softeware. They use
Icarus Verilog for synthesis.

The router seems to work somehow, they intend to do more intelligent
placing next (Independent, since it's not tied to a particular FPGA
architecture
