they require Windows for the IDE and the instruction set
and the peripherals are ... awkward ?
The only benefit is that it's quite easy to get
something mostly working quickly, when a project
with proper funding requires an immediate result.
If you're not too picky. And have time to read

I prefer the ENC28J60 : smaller, cheaper, few pins.

I think that Beck makes ethernet-enable modules too.

I think I have some ASIX chips as well,
parallel interface and 10/100Mbps,
competitive with SMSC's controllers.


Now if Tim's friend has a better idea of what is needed
and what is available, it would be good.
A softcore CPU is needed in all cases to handle
the data, TCP/IP offloading offered by some products
is not enough.
