Things are pretty snappy in X.  It is only the framebuffer driver (i.e. Full 
screen console) that is sluggish.

There's a fairly standard X setting that lets you select a shadow
buffer.  This improves things dramatically, I can't remeber whether
I force this on in the driver - I don't think I do (I'm still
finding my way around X - this was my first real dive into the
code).
