This isn't a full data sheet but just a product blurb.

Is there a cost estimate?

Not till it is shipping or they have a shipping date. :-(

I've lost track. A few of the candidate chips have prices,
but are there any with a real data sheet?

If we can't get a real data sheet we can't use the chip.
Unless someone thinks they can reverse engineer it.

I wouldn't worry about that. A real data sheet should show up before it
is shipping as a regular product.

I'm not a business type, what does it take to get a real
data sheet? Do they require an NDA signed by a VP of a
Fortune 500 company or what? A lot of products come
from dinky little companies, how do they get data sheets?

This is an advanced announcement. So, if there is a draft data sheet,
the normal thing is to provide it only with an NDA. If we want to get
such preliminary draft stuff, it shouldn't be a problem if the OHF asks
for them and the Chair/President signs.

if "Sigma Designs chips are said to have problems with
anything other than plain play mode," (from 1st draft of
requirements) these might have similar problems.

Editorial:
This appears to be a general 1st generation problem. Why the hell do
companies release chips that don't quite work correctly. Yes, low end
stuff isn't going to support all the features, but it should still work.

Yeah. :-( And I worry about the ability to handle things
that are not quite standard, like TV stations that send out
1088i instead of 1080i.

A chip that large is bound to have errata on the first general release.
A relevant question here is how much of the firm ware is contained in
the chip and how much needs to be in an external flash PROM. There are
standards for transmission. So, the total number of lines (visible +
blanking -- remember that CRTs still exist) would have to be the same.
If they chose to have more visible lines, they would probably simply be
ignored by anything that didn't handle them.
