Appears to have been a more fundamental problem with the hardware. In trying to work through this, finally got to the point where reinstalling Ubuntu from the CD seemed the only thing to do--couldn't install. Had to discard the RAID arrays via the BIOS and recreate them before anything was possible. So, the Apache HTTPD update may not be as hazardous as I thought. I'll retest the update on a VM if I can find the time.
