Hi Charles,

We were able to install Evergreen on Ubuntu 8.04, 9.10, 10.04 as well as Debian
5. Most recently, I was able to do a clean standard install of Evergreen
1.6.0.6 on Debian 5 following the installation instructions.

I don't have any tricks, but a few tips based on past frustrations and
experience:

1) Start off with the most basic server version of Ubuntu or Debian and let the
Evergreen pre-requisite installer (in the instructions) install the
pre-requisites you need. Uncheck all of the extras when installing the OS
except the SSH option.

2) Start with the most basic setup - single server installation of Evergreen.

3) Use the latest stable release available from
http://open-ils.org/downloads.php

4) As Dan mentioned, follow the instructions to the letter.

5) Try to understand the other working pieces in the Evergreen software stack
including apache, postgresql, ejabberd, dodjoToolkit, etc... There is free
documentation for those pieces. Sometimes answers to Evergreen issues can be
found in the logs for some of those other dependencies.

6) Try to ask the more specific questions when asking the list and I am not
sure I would send a zipped file of error logs. Personally, I am not very
comfortable opening zip files via email attachments but that might be my own
paranoia.

7) Be patient when asking questions. Many of the questions are answered by the
developers or by the community members who have other full time
responsibilities. Sometimes they get busy and I am pretty sure they all have
lives outside of Evergreen. Moreover, I believe they are working on and
supporting several versions at the same time including 1.6.0.x series, 1.6.1.x
series, 1.4 series and 2.0. with lots of Evergreen users and fans eagerly
awaiting the next release.

Getting questions answered on the list is sometimes a matter of timing. In some
cases questions receive very quick responses and in some cases it may take a
few days or very rarely the question may slip through the cracks entirely. I
believe this is the nature of free Open-source software. That being said, I've
had many questions answered on weekends and at odd hours so support is not
restricted to 9-5 mon-fri as some proprietary companies limit their support.

The IRC chat option is probably a good alternative for getting quick responses,
but I haven't used it much. I have browsed the logs and found many helpful
solutions. Based on the logs, the most active times for the IRC chat it seems
are in the afternoons mon-fri.

Regards,
Robert
