We have some folks who I’ve encouraged to start doing this within our consortium, to great effect. It’s also been helpful with that handful of incorrect images here and there.
I’m also toying with the manually hosted option as well. You can create a free account, log in, and click "Add a cover image" on entries like https://openlibrary.org/works/OL16042192W/Collaborative_communities to then upload a cover image.
