We have had this presented as a development request by some libraries in our consortium. Basically, self-registration would need to actually create a bona fide patron record in the database so it can be seen by SIP2. This means the Pending process would need to be bypassed. While some libraries would like to provide instantaneous access to SIP2 databases, others are not comfortable with a patron record being created without some vetting by staff. This is one of those development requests that, while laudable, do not have universal support.

I've been told other ILSes (Is that a word?) perform this function. When staff process online applications, new card holders get a welcome email with their card number so that they can start using online resources. The physical card arrives a few days later via snail mail. It's not instant, but it's fairly quick. That was the reason we chose to implement the remote registration: to be able to grant access to users across the state as quickly and seamlessly as possible. Circulation staff monitor the pending patrons screen and are able to approve users quickly. These users could be routed into an internet-access permission group. I’m not sure if that answers your question, but it’s a workflow that functions well for us.
