Great idea. One quibble -- I'd try calling it "automounts" instead of "soft 
mounts", if you want to use an analogy to an old term.  "soft mounts" really 
means something else that AFS already does naturally.  I think we've all been 
envisioning something like this existing in conjunction with AFSDB support, so 
afs_lookup() would magic up the mountpoint as a side effect of your doing a 
lookup of it.
