i like using the existing space on the filesystem. usually i havent planned ahead for a new filesystem partition. so i like things like memcache. perhaps afs could use a single cache file? this probably would not suffer from the various 'find the inode' problems.

I don't see why it should be any different to allocate a large file and use it like memcache.
